Description
Anastrozole, sold under the research designation Arimidex, is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (AI) used extensively in endocrine and metabolic research.
It functions by reversibly inhibiting the aromatase enzyme (CYP19A1), which is responsible for the conversion of androgens into estrogens.
Unlike steroidal inhibitors such as Exemestane (Aromasin), Anastrozole acts as a competitive, reversible inhibitor, making it a preferred compound for studies requiring precise control of estrogen synthesis and rapid reversibility of suppression.
Research applications include examining feedback regulation within the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, androgen–estrogen balance, and hormonal modulation in post-cycle and reproductive system studies.
