Description
AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activator used in research exploring energy metabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, and cellular stress response.
Once inside cells, AICAR is phosphorylated to ZMP (AICAR monophosphate), an AMP analog that directly activates AMPK, mimicking the effects of cellular energy depletion or exercise.
Activation of AMPK by AICAR has been shown to enhance glucose uptake, increase fatty acid oxidation, and improve mitochondrial efficiency.
These properties make it a valuable model compound for studying metabolic diseases, endurance physiology, insulin sensitivity, and mitochondrial adaptation.
