Description
Human Menopausal Gonadotropin (HMG) is a naturally derived glycoprotein hormone complex containing both FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone).
It is isolated from the urine of postmenopausal women, purified, and standardized by biological potency (IU) rather than mass, due to variable glycosylation states that influence activity.
In research applications, HMG is used to study gonadal steroidogenesis, follicular maturation, spermatogenesis, and pituitary–gonadal axis regulation.
The FSH component primarily stimulates ovarian follicle and Sertoli cell development, while the LH component promotes ovulation and Leydig cell androgen synthesis.
This dual action makes HMG a key reagent for exploring hormonal regulation, receptor signaling, and fertility-related endocrinology in in vitro and in vivo systems.
